Regarding Position Papers and other conference notes

Only two more weeks until the conference!

I’ve gotten a lot of your position papers and have been making my way through them. The ones that I’ve read have been great so far.

I imagine that I should be getting a lot more of your papers in the mail this week. However I did want to mention something. I’ve been getting a lot of papers by email and I’m sorry but I’m just not able to print out 40 ten-page papers. If I got your emailed papers before the deadline, then I will consider you eligible for committee awards. However, if you want your papers to be read and scored, please print out a hard copy of them and mail them to BMUN as soon as you can. If I get them before the conference, then I or my vice chairs will read it.

The entire secretariat has been very busy prepping for the conference and I think it’s going to be an amazing weekend. I’m also the Special Events officer and have been actively involved in planning the opening/closing ceremonies as well as the delegate dance, and there’s definitely been so much to do in order to make sure everything runs smoothly and looks great. I’m especially excited because this year, for our keynote speaker speech during opening ceremonies, Greg Mortenson, best-selling author of Three Cuts of Tea, has recorded a video especially for BMUN. Also, he has generously donated a free copy of his book to every delegate! He’s an inspiring and interesting person, and a great speaker, so I definitely encourage all of you to try to make it to our opening ceremonies.

The dance is called BMUN Jetsetters and is an around-the-world theme and will be beautifully decorated. There is going to be an amazing DJ and a casino where you can gamble BMUN dollars, and then cash them in at the prize station for raffle tickets for over $200 worth of prizes. It’s going to be a great time for everyone who comes.

And of course I’m looking forward to working with my vice chairs and chairing for all of you! I hope as the conference gets closer, I’ll see some comments from you guys on this blog.

If there are any comments or concerns, just comment here or email me and I will do my best to address them.

Hey, I was wondering whether the agenda is debatable once debate is opened. Also, should we bring a laptop?

Yes the agenda is debatable once debate is open as long as someone motions for a change.

As for laptops, they do come in handy for writing resolutions because we can project the resolution onto a screen for everyone to see during formal caucus. However, I don’t think there will be enough power outlets in the lecture rooms to support more than 5-10 laptops, so people will have to conserve power and use the laptops for only resolution writing. So it is definitely a matter a preference for you, the delegates.

If you do bring a laptop though, a flash drive also comes in handy.
