Zachary Simmons

My name is Zachary Simmons and I am a first year student intending on majoring in Political Science, most likely with an emphasis in international relations. The way in which states interact amongst themselves and with non-state actors has always fascinated me and thus choosing to join Berkeley Model United Nations – a venue whose primary purpose is to replicate the stimulating discourse of the world’s premier international institution – was in no sense a difficult decision. This will be my first conference serving on a committee and I await this task with much anticipation. More specifically, the appeal of the Legal Committee is definitely a component of this conference which is very exciting to me. International law is the basis and foundation for a great deal of state interactions and dictates courses of action, court rulings, etc. At the same time the complexities of international law present challenges to even the most astute scholars, causing great controversy between states. I look forward to the dissemination of some of these complexities within the committee and watching the formation of resolutions based on sound legal rationale.

Tiffany Wang

Hello! My name is Tiffany Wang and I am a first year student at Cal. I’m intending on majoring in Political Science with an emphasis on International Relations and doubling that with Peace and Conflict Studies. I attended Cerritos High School, where i was apart of their MUN program for four years. All together, I’ve had 4 years of delegate experience and 2 years of chairing experience. I am extremely excited about our topics and I hope all of you are as well! See you in committee soon! Take care!

Erin Simmer

Hi, my name is Erin Simmer and I am a second year Political Economy of Industrial Societies (PEIS) and History double major here at UC Berkeley. I am focusing on comparisons of economic development processes between nations in East and Southeast Asia, as well as the ramifications of European colonialism in such areas.  I am considering a French minor, and
basically live for International Affairs.  I have participated in Model United Nations Conferences for 8 years now, beginning with Junior Model United Nations’ conferences in Middle School, which I chaired in High School.  I am very involved on campus, and have been an active participant of the University’s Rally Committee, Greek life, and the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship Association.   I am originally from San Diego, but love the Bay Area equally.

Welcome to 6th Legal Committee.

Sunday, December 2nd, 2007

Hi everyone! My name is Hyo Jeong Kwon, and I am currenly a junior attending UC Berkeley. I am a double major in Political Science and Legal Studies, and my major area of focus is Constitutional Law.

I have selected this committee and relevant topics specifically to address legal issues and proceedings in a larger context, the United Nations. You will get a hands on experience of how resolutions are dealt and learn the art of diplomacy when sensitive conflict between nations arise. Those of you interested in going to law school or simply studying international jurisdiction should find this committee useful. Feel free to contact me at any time with questions: hkwon(at)berkeley.edu. I expect thorough research into the topic as well as a deep understanding of specified sections of treaties such as the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties as indicated in the Topic Synopsis. High intelligence in regards to the infrastructure and the fundamental basis of international law governing the UN and other global affairs would earn you an advantage in this committee.

Good luck, and see you in March.
