Vice Chair Introduction

December 5th, 2008 by 1540

Hey folks,

My name is Nic Walder and I will be one of your vice chairs in Security Council 1540.  I am currently a sophomore majoring in Rhetoric and Conservation and Resource Studies.  I plan to focus my studies on the use of language behind international environmental policy.  I am from Southern California, where I participated in two years of high school MUN.  Since joining BMUN last year, I have served as a chair at 4 conferences, including one in Hangzhou, China this past summer.  This year I am currently serving as Under-Secretary General of Outreach, a position which allows me to teach MUN to students at different high schools in the Bay Area, while trying to start new MUN clubs.

Aside from the boring school stuff, my free time is spent watching movies, The Sopranos, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm.  I also enjoy driving my Miata around to all the wonderful restaurants in Berkeley.  In addition to BMUN, I am also active in the Student Advocate’s Office, where I assist students who need help with financial aid and school expenses.

BMUN was my favorite conference in high school, and I hope we can make your experience just as memorable as mine was.  Check back here for more updates and keep researching.  This year’s Security Council should be a lot of fun, and 1540 will definitely be the best.

Cheers!

Nic Walder

To give you an idea of the looming position of Russia, I suggest your read http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7759892.stm

I’m not going to give you a summary of this particular article, but it would be important for you to know the background involvement of US-Russia in South America. Also, some questions to ponder: What is Russia doing? How/Where does the United States have power in the area? What kind of statement is Russia trying to make? Why is this important to the 1540 committee?

Hey delegates! I’m Sohail Khanifar, your beautiful head chair for 1540 Security Council. I’m a sophmore in Berkeley and I’m currently studying Peace and Conflict Studies. I’ve been doing MUN for around 6 years and I’ve always thought that it was the most practical class to take in highschool. I mean, come on, when are you ever going to really use calculus in real life?

Along with vice-chairs Nicolas Walder and Shreyans Kothari (who will be introducing themselves to you soon), we will be discussing the US-Russia topic. We’ll be posting news bulletins and stories we think are interesting/pertinent in this blog within the coming months - keep an eye out!

Oh, I also heard rumors that the committtees are tracking the comments made by countries in the blogs. Thought you might like to know. :)

Best,

Sohail Khanifar
